Having worked in the music industry for 10 years, it is safe to say Roberta knows a thing or two about music! As an advocate of mental health awareness we asked Roberta to share with us some of her knowledge on how music and wellbeing are aligned, plus she shares some of her top tips and playlists with us.

Music, Mental Health + Your Wellbeing

Mental health is a part of wellness sometimes overlooked but is so important to our overall well being, in these times more than ever and I believe that music is the unprescribed medicine we all need in our lives.

"I believe that music is the unprescribed medicine we all need in our lives."

Whether it’s the soundtrack to dancing in a field with your best friends, the first dance at your wedding or the tune that you always pick up pace to during a run, music plays such an important role in our lives and can help trigger memory, alleviate stress as well as lift our mood.

Music can inspire, comfort, motivate, and relax. There are also multiple science-backed benefits that show how listening to music supports our physical, mental and emotional well-being.

  • Improve mood
  • Reduce Stress
  • Improve endurance & performance
  • Aid meditation & enhance mindfulness
  • Heal heartache
  • Promote restful sleep
  • Boost motivation
  • Help memory recall

& my favourite… It gets you on the dancefloor!

I have worked in music for 10 years and my love for it grows each day. The dance floor is an amazing inclusive space which has been dearly missed but it has been inspiring to see the music industry adapt and still bring people some amazing experiences to enjoy in their homes.

For me I associate Summer with dance music; festivals, Ibiza and some pumping DJ mixes soundtracking my runs.

If you’re looking for a mood lift I would recommend these amazing virtual festivals / DJ Sets: Defected Virtual Festival - We Dance As One Beatport - ReConnect DJ Mag - Low Steppa At Home Planet Snowbombing - BKLAVA

As much as music can lift mood & energy levels it can also relax both body and mind. According to research, listening to a peaceful playlist can soothe stress and induce relaxation by slowing your breathing and heart rate, lowering your blood pressure, and reducing the body’s levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

Here are some amazing apps that bring together music and meditation:

BBC Radio One’s Sarah Story has put together a playlist of good vibe tunes to kick off your day while tucking into a Ginger Health Foods breakfast bowl. Have a listen here.
